John Mayer has let go of his bad boy ways and embraced his vulnerable side. Let’s be honest, we all knew it was in there somewhere. Deep down, there’s a beautiful soul lingering beneath the mask of his childish antics and too quick mouth. Friday, the singer released his cover of Beyonce’s song ‘XO’ on Soundcloud.
On April 12, the singer tweeted his appreciation for the song, “The best thing about Beyonce? The break in her voice on the first “baby, love me lights out” in XO. Real and Raw.” Since then, he has tweeted various lines from the song and Instagrammed a preview of him recording the song in the studio.
His take on the song like the original, is real and raw. His tone is soft and low. There is no auto-tune, no heavy extras in terms of instruments. The only backing to his aching tone is the sweet sound of the harmonica. Warning: the cover may make you want to light a few candles, pour yourself a glass of wine, and phone your ex.
