For one night, Jon Stewart’s Daily Show came back to life, albeit at Stephen Colbert’s desk. His ten-minute monologue was comedic, at one point he even broke out into song from “Hamilton.” But the monologue was decidedly not lighthearted, with Stewart’s acidic comments eviscerating Fox News host Sean Hannity, along with others.
He said:
“With the Rio Olympics coming up, I’m enjoying the gymnastics portion of the program that’s about to occur. That would be the contortions that many conservatives will now have to do, to embrace Donald J. Trump, a man who clearly embodies the things that they have, for years, said that they have hated about Barack Obama.”
His acerbic wit was intertwined with clips of Fox News panelists, edited to show their hypocrisy, showcasing that every term they used to describe Obama actually describes Trump:
“Either Lumpy (Sean Hannity) and his friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christian readers-of-prompter being president. Or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter-authoritarian-tyrant-narcissist.”
Stewart became angrier the longer he spoke, with Colbert cutting in several times to remind Stewart that he can’t say certain words on live television. Stewart at one point irately yelled to those spewing Trump’s rhetoric that, “This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no real America. You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of the military, police, and firefighters.”
