Paris Fashion Week was privy to an haute couture collection of some serious gems. Cartier, Dior, Bulgari and now Kova.
Kova hit the runway as hard as a diamond during its maiden year. The London-based jewelry line bases its gem design on a Russian Suprematism aesthetic. The designer, Katie Kova, produces extremely geometric pieces with a spartan eye when it comes to the simple and sharp lines.
Kova explains to Vogue.com, ““Kova isn’t obviously feminine, yet it isn’t masculine, either. It’s on trend, but not trendy. That careful balance is what today’s jewelry collectors are after.”
While Kova is known for its angular earrings, lightweight chokers and thin cuffs, it’s now adding cocktail rings to its couture collection. Kova’s first haute line featured six cocktail rings, each one handmade with Pavé diamonds. Kova curates a marriage of diamonds with cubes of nephrite, while rose pearls overlay cubes of black gold.
“Nothing is more couture than a cocktail ring,” Kova states. “It sits beautifully on the hand and makes a statement on its own.”
The ring’s 3-D sculpture suspended over the ring’s base is a statement, alright. The Pavé diamonds form an infinite path, mapping the construction of the angular and geometric detailing. The pearl sits atop the black golden cube, as though a priceless display piece, guarded by the surrounding silver and diamonds.
Kova explains the design of the couture rings, “ “We aren’t traditional in our approach. We spent 18 months developing the collection, sourcing rare gemstones, and meeting the specifications you expect for haute couture, but our techniques are very contemporary. For example, we never use fully pavéd diamonds. We like our diamonds chic and understated.”
The collection as a whole exudes expense, even with the understated diamonds. The design’s intricacy alongside the ring’s modern appeal will set Kova apart from the other heavy-studded hitters as the designer embarks on her second year of haute couture.
