Kristen Bell Does ‘Mary Poppins’ Parody about Minimum Wage

Actress Kristen Bell, 34, has made a humorous “Mary Poppins” parody in collaboration with “Funny or Die” in order to inform the public about minimum wage.

In the video, Kristin dresses up as Julie Andrews in the 1964 film, “Mary Poppins,” and she sings a song to the tune of “A Spoon Full of Sugar” with lyrics that support increasing the federal minimum wage.

Kristen Bell portrays a fed-up Mary Poppins who is forced to quit her job for the Banks family because she is not making a livable salary. In the bit, the “Frozen” actress declares, “In every job that must be done, you must be paid in more than fun. You get your paycheck and snap [she snaps], federal and state income tax, medicare and social security—why, you’re living below the poverty line.” In another line she sings, “Just a $3 increase can make a living wage.”

When Poppins tries to open her umbrella in the bit, she finds that it is broken, and she hilariously labels it as, “supercalifragilisticexpialibulls–t.”

Like in the movie, animated penguins make an appearance, and some birds show up. The animals in this version, however, are impoverished. Poppins also explains, “I don’t get these birds for free.”

With the current minimum wage at $7.25, domestic workers, such as the fictional character Mary Poppins presumably, are compelled to live below the poverty line.
