La La Land picked up seven awards at the Golden Globes on January 8th.
Competing against Deadpool, 20th Century Women, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Sing Street, La La Land won Best Motion Picture in the category for musicals and comedies. It also won Best Screenplay, Best Original Song, and Best Original Score, according to the Golden Globes list of winners and nominees. Damien Chazelle won Best Director, and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won Best Actor and Best Actress in their film category.
According to the New York Times, the last film to win more than four statuettes at the Globes was Midnight Express in 1979, which garnered six awards. Now La La Land holds the record for Globes won.
The film has already been nominated for (and in some cases, won) numerous other honors, including at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, AACTA International Awards, the African-American Film Critics Association, and many others. In fact, IMDb lists 112 wins out of 168 nominations for various awards. La La Land also currently enjoys a critical score of 92% on review site Rotten Tomatoes and not just the critics like it—the film has a 89% audience approval rating, making it both a critical and popular success.
The film stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in a song- and dance-filled story about love and big dreams and the tension between those two desires, according to IMDB.
A few of the other notable winners include Moonlight for the Best Motion Picture in drama and Crown as the Best Television Series in drama, and Zootopia took the award for best-animated motion picture. Viola Davis won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for Fences, and Tom Hiddleston won Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for The Night Manager.
