The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and flowers are starting to come out again. You know what this means: Perfect running weather! It’s not too hot and it’s not too chilly. However, running is hard. There is no exercise that is really “easy,” and if it seems too easy you have to push harder! Even yoga, which is supposed to be relaxing, is pretty difficult. Running is great and awful at the same time. It is an intense love-hate relationship.

It’s hard. No need to sugar coat it. Running is hard, especially if you are just starting out. Your lungs feel like they are on fire, you’re just tired from the movement, and your feet are going to hurt by the end of it. So, if you are just starting out, don’t feel self-conscious when you walk. Running however many miles is not something you can just do right away. You have to work hard at it and stick to it. If you choose the runner’s life it is a commitment.

Running can be therapeutic. You go off on your own, maybe with some music, and be on your own. This can be some great me-time. Running buddies are great, but everyone needs some alone time. Since no one really ever wants to join in with running it is an easy excuse to go off by yourself.

Seeing your progress will make you want to stick with it. When you start, it’s going to be tough, but it’ll be worth it in the end. You’ll get stronger and faster. You’ll be able to go further and further. Your running shoes will start to pick up mileage, just like your car. Eventually, you will love running and want to do it more often.

Yeah, it’s difficult to start, and there will be times when you just want to give up. Don’t! You never want to start back from square one. And once you start to see the progress you’ll get excited about running.  Now lace up those running shoes and hit the trail!
