Makeup fans, get ready to boldly go where no man has gone before! MAC cosmetics is partnering with Star Trek for its 50th anniversary to launch a limited edition Star Trek themed makeup collection. The iconic science fiction franchise is a cult classic, beloved by fans all over the world, so it is no surprise that Trekkies are chomping at the bit to get their hands on it! Not since the announcement of the Selena Quintanilla collection has there been such excitement about a collab.
The main focus of the collection is on the iconic women of the franchise: Deanna Troi, Seven of Nine, Vina, and Lt. Uhura. Among all of the iconic leading ladies’ roles, Lt. Uhura, played by actress Nichelle Nichols was the most ground-breaking since it was the first time in history a black female had obtained a major television role. This was huge since it came at a time in which Dr. Marten Luther King was leading the Civil Rights Rights movement. Nichols actually thought of leaving the show after her first season to pursue other opportunities and Dr. King himself actually met with her and helped convince her to stay. According to a profile on Nichelle Nichols for Pioneers of Television by PBS, she shared the following words from MLK: “You have the first important non-traditional role, non-stereotypical role. … You cannot abdicate your position. You are changing the minds of people across the world, because for the first time, through you, we see ourselves and what can be.” As a result, Nichols realized her role was much bigger than herself so she decided to stay.
MAC did a pre-release for fans in mid-July at Comic-con in San Diego, CA and the collection received rave reviews from both Trekkies and makeup enthusiasts alike. The collection consists of eye shadows, eyeliners, nail polishes, lipsticks and lip glosses, highlighters, lashes, and brushes. The packaging has the Star Trek Star Fleet insignia in metallic silver with the number 50 in black emblazoned across it, and the names are reminiscent of an out of this world experience. Names such as, “KHAAAAN!,” Luna luster,” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” are just some of the fun product names you will see in this collection.
The collection launches in stores and on counters this Thursday, September 1st, so make sure to have Scotty beam you up early, so you can get your hands on these amazing products before they are gone forever!
