In a world where many people are somewhat figuratively attached to their iPhones, our technology fixation has become somewhat inconvenient. Anyone who has wandered around with an iPhone in hand – whether it’s at a party or at the beach – can probably tell you; unless you have a bag or pockets, you’re most likely stuck holding you’re your phone.

French fashion house Maison Margiela has proposed an answer to this quandary; just keep the phone at your ankle! Last week, the label debuted their Autumn-Winter Artisanal show; which was rather futuristic in tone. One of the most notable features was a variety of smartphone holsters that fastened at the ankle.

The holsters are kept in place by two arms and a Velcro strap. The phone itself is held by another extendable arm, which can be protracted and retracted at will; lest you bump into someone with your phone.

The overall collection was described by the brand as “an image of nomadic glamour.” This certainly makes sense, the collection which came off as rather eccentric and avant-garde was purposefully designed with the label’s visions of the future; with outlets like Cnet comparing to it to something that would “fit into the Blade Runner franchise.” The fashion house further commented on the overall meaning of the show, stating “The autumn-winter 2018 ‘Artisanal’ Collection observes a parallel between the timeless spartan wanderer and the perpetually connected follower of the technological age.”

Having debuted during Paris Couture week, the holster may be couture’s attempt at practicality. However, it may really be just that; an item whose functionality does not stray far from the runway. Though, who knows? Maybe ankles as an alternative to purses will become all the rage.
