Most women wake up in the morning, look at themselves in the mirror, and think, “good thing I don’t have to be seen like this in public.” If you don’t, consider yourself lucky – you’re one of the few that doesn’t at least need a brush or a swipe of makeup here or there to feel a bit more confident.

Studies show that the concept of wearing makeup to be perceived as superior isn’t all in our heads. Researchers from Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital found that women wearing makeup are seen as more competent, trustworthy, and likable, according to birchbox.com.

Scientific research isn’t the only thing keeping women hiding behind their makeup. Can you think of the last time you saw a celebrity without the foundation caked on? Heck, there are pages in magazines highlighting the snapshots of celebs in their not-so-pretty natural state.

Is this fair? Probably not. But is it justified? Maybe. Makeup has such a powerful effect on women that the absence of it is something that stands out in the crowd. If these products can produce such wonderful results for women, then why does everyone fight it? It may not be something to be proud of, but it’s the way the cookie crumbles. If makeup can raise one’s self-esteem, then who’s to say it’s not worth it?
