Walt Disney’s “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie, brings in over $70 million during it’s opening weekend.
Maleficent, while not the only film to hit theaters this weekend, cannot be compared to the other popular movies on the big screen.
These films, released the same weekend at “Maleficent” include, “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” which made $17 million on its opening weekend, and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which gathered $32 million. However, these numbers only speak for the United States. According to Box Office Mojo, “Maleficent” only mad $170 million worldwide, when compared to other competing films which made over $500 million.
Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, said that they were very excited about the attention and money the film has been receiving.

“Maleficent” is based on the classic tale, “Sleeping Beauty,” where a princess is cursed by the evil fairy: Maleficent. The curse causes Princess Aurora to die, after pricking her finger on a spindle. While this fairytale has been told time and time again, this latest film, starring Angelina Jolie, is told from Maleficent’s perspective.
The concept of redoing a film from a different perspective may be seen has Hollywood running out of ideas, but regardless of opinion, the movie is doing what producers wanted, making money. With an A-List cast, an estimated $175 million budget and all of the advertising put into the re-make, this film was almost guaranteed to do well.
Jolie, with her cheekbones and foot-tall horns, captures your attention with her magnificent portrayal of Maleficent, making her more than just a witch.
