Contrary to public demand, it seems society does not tire of tucking, tanning, de-stretching, re-sizing and re-touching.

The latest Photoshop scandal may shock you. How could anyone think Mariah Carey could possibly be anymore beautiful? With the help of technology and a hint of Photoshop, Terry Richardson found a way.

Terry Richardson shot the pictures for Mariah’s latest cover for Wonderland magazine.

Jezebel managed to get their hands on the original pictures for the cover, which many found to be stunning. If you remember, Mariah did give birth to twins and her body barely shows it. However, the re-touched photos include Mariah with a thinner jawline, more defined legs, a thinner waist and bigger boobs, no stretch marks, creases or tears in her dress, and even more volume in her hair.

It is widely known that Photoshop is commonly used in many high-fashion magazines. That very fact made it hard to distinguish what is real and what isn’t. Not many people know to what extent Photoshop is applied in magazine photos. To see the comparisons side-by-side are shocking. Especially when, to the human eye, there are no visible flaws.

In an article featured on Jezebel, the writer argues that if excessive Photoshop was required in order for these photos to be published, the only thing to blame is Terry Richardson’s photography skills. Seeing as his “point-and-shoot-built-in-flash style isn’t flattering enough for publication.” The color of Mariah’s skin and makeup had to be digitally altered due to the fact that it was so washed out by the flash. This is Richardson’s signature shooting style. It is meant to showcase authenticity in the captured moment. However, authenticity in this case was achieved by means of computer software. Not so authentic, is it Terry?
