Men’s Shorts are Officially In

For men, shorts are now officially the new pants.

This season, Paris Fashion Week was filled with shorts. From the front rows at Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton show to the street outside Comme des Garçons to the Alyx afterparty, men were wearing shorts everywhere. Some wore sporty Adidas soccer shorts and others wore loose (and quite swishy) fashion shorts. Some even dared to wear cut-off denim shorts. Khakis and cargo shorts were also in the mix.

For ages, shorts have been seen as strictly casual wear, but it looks like we’ve officially abandoned this idea. Clubs and restaurants around the world have been known to ban shorts, but accept jeans. The shorts movement happening right now is forcing all of us to think: what’s really the big deal? It’s about time men start exploring more styles. With respected designers and luxury brands introducing shorts into the world of men’s fashion, opinions are starting to change.

So where did the trend come from? Nick Wooster, a street-style legend who has worked for Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, and Neiman Marcus, explains that it’s probably part of the sneaker-sweatpants casualization trend. With streetwear becoming more and more prominent in luxury goods, it seems that everything is turning casual. Suits can now be worn with sneakers and button-up shirts can be paired with shorts instead of trousers.

Rei Kawakubo, Japanese fashion designer and founder of Comme des Garçons, has turned the sloppy long shorts into an elegant style status symbol. Her recent Spring-Summer 2018 collection showcased a pair of long and flowy, pink-sequined shorts. They almost look like part of a ballerina costume, but with the right accessories, they might just work. And they are opening up the possibilities for what men can wear. Such “out-there” shorts are hinting that it really is ok to step outside of your comfort zone when it comes to fashion, even if you’re a man.

My name is Lindsey and I love anything related to fashion. In my free time, I enjoy writing, reading, painting, and photography. I love cherry blossom trees and sunflowers. I like to get involved in anything creative and challenge myself to try new things. I love music and dancing. My favorite song is "Best Part" by Daniel Caesar and it reminds me of sunshine. My motivations include ice cream and my dog.

It’s so interesting to me how certain articles of clothing, like shorts, are viewed as formal or informal due to the fashion industry’s influence. It’ll be interesting to see if upscale restaurants will begin to accept shorts due to the apparent prevalence of this trend, or not.
