The Vanguard Award will be given to Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup artist Michael Westmore in recognition of his noteworthy achievements in the makeup and hairstyling fields at the 11th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) Awards.
Westmore had three more nominations during his remarkable career and won an Oscar in 1986 for his work on the picture “Mask.” In addition to his astounding accomplishments, he has a record-breaking 45 Emmy nominations and nine wins. Notably, he has contributed to over 600 episodes of several Star Trek programs and worked on classic movies like “Rocky” and “Raging Bull.” Based on information provided by the Guild, he succeeded his father, Monte Westmore, who worked on “Gone With the Wind,” and has been a critical player in the makeup departments of almost all major studios since 1917.
Karen J. Westerfield, the Guild’s business representative, expressed her excitement and joy by saying, “IATSE Local 706 is excited and thrilled to honor Michael Westmore with the Vanguard Award.” She emphasized Westmore’s unmatched accomplishments and industry knowledge, highlighting his support and direction that have raised community members. Westerfield recognized the Westmore legacy’s enduring influence, which will surely motivate the next generations of hairdressers and cosmetics artists. Celebrating Westmore’s accomplishments and extraordinary talent, the Guild pays proper tribute to the “man, the myth, the mentor… Michael Westmore.”
Beyond Michael Westmore, the previously announced honorees include Kevin Haney, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning makeup artist best known for his work on “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and Ora T. Green, the Emmy-nominated hairstylist known for her work on “Star Trek: Nemesis” and “Good Times.” The February 18 awards ceremony is slated to present Lifetime Achievement Awards to both Haney and Green.
