Just about all women on the planet (and some men, too) are obsessively addicted to their nails. Whether it’s their shape, color, or design (ah nail art, a double-edged sword), we thought we’d seen it all. But then, everything changed. Well, not everything, just some things. That thing is nail foundation.

We all know and love foundation—for our face. It provides a blank canvas for your makeup, hides imperfections, makes everything smooth and even, and even grants you Beyoncé-like levels of flawlessness. The same can be said, in fact, for nail foundation. Designed to do all of these things, but for your nails, nail foundations are steadily growing in popularity among nail artists and beauty mavens alike.

RGB Cosmetics, a known nail color and care favorite among the big leaguers, was one of the first upscale brands to dip their brush into the nail foundation pot. With its collaboration with Celebrity Nail Stylist Jenna Hipp (yes, such a title actually does exist), HIPPxRGB developed their award-winning Nail Foundation. Created in four distinct, foundation-worthy colors (F1 is the fairest, while F4 is deepest), these foundations are designed for your nails to seamlessly blend in with practically any skin tone. Whether you want a truly nude nail color, or value the imperfection-hiding properties, HIPPxRGB may be just what you need, but never thought you did.

British nail company Butter London has also come out with their own spin on nail foundation. “This silk-finish, stain resistant base coat provides the perfect foundation… it leaves a silky, matte finish when used alone,” says Butter London’s website. “[Nail foundation is also] an excellent product for men who want an invisible, but immaculate manicure.”

Would you ever consider giving nail foundation a try? Or will you just stick to base coats and nearly nude shades?
