The New Yoga Trend, Ditching Clothes for More Flexibility?

Ever heard of Naked Yoga? Or perhaps ‘Nagna Yoga’ in Sankskrit? Surely, if you love and practice Yoga you certainly may have.  This has become increasingly popular in the U.S  since the 1960’s  as part of the hippie movement. A short documentary with the title Naked Yoga was even nominated for the Academy Awards in the short subjects category in 1975. But this [ Nagna Yoga or Naked Yoga] spiritual practice has been and still is since the ancient times, especially in India.

A Yoga studio in Chelsea, a suburb of New York city provides a way for its students to focus on celebrating their bodies. How? Naked and Bold. Offering a $25 naked Yoga classes, vinyasa courses in a co-ed format, and even a gender segregated formats.  But should you not be as open minded or comfortable in your body enough to celebrate it, you may take part in their fully-clothed classes and the teacher training programs.

‘There are a lot of things that separate us in a normal Yoga class, like what brand of yoga clothing you’re wearing or how you look when you’re wearing it,’ Vanessa Kennedy, a naked Yoga class attendee, told Reuters. ‘But when we’re naked, it’s like we’re all the same.’

The two co-owners of Naked and Bold,  Monika Werner and Joschi Schwarz says  ‘Practicing Yoga naked frees you from negative feelings about your body and allows [you] to be more accepting and deeper connected with yourself and the world around you.’  ‘Yoga moves a lot of energy throughout the body and sometimes erections happen. But once we start moving, there is no way an erection could be sustained, because of the physical nature of Vinyasa Yoga.’  But as human as we are, how would you deal with looking at an attractive naked body?  ‘Don’t waste your time. [They stated],  The energy in the room is very clear and members who come to Bold & Naked are very focused on celebrating their bodies through Yoga.’ The studio says that erections during the class do occur, but happen ‘rarely’. They nonetheless encourage that ‘when it does it’s okay and nothing to be embarrassed about. It will pass quickly.  ‘Yoga moves a lot of energy throughout the body and sometimes erections happen. But once we start moving, there is no way an erection could be sustained, because of the physical nature of Vinyasa Yoga.’

They have firmly stated on their site with bold and capital letters [screaming]:  ‘IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ORGASM, YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE.’  According to UK’s dailymail, while sometimes partner work or pairing  may be involved in the classes, thus there maybe  body-to-body contacts, ‘sexual touching and should any contact of sexual nature occur, it will not be tolerated and will result in the offending member being asked to leave. ‘Anyone who has been asked to leave will not be allowed back to attend classes in the future.’

On the studios’  faq part of their website, they write; ‘While many equate being naked with sex, this couldn’t be further from the truth in a Naked Yoga class. It’s about being comfortable in your own skin and the amazing confidence that comes with it.’
