Louis Vuitton announced the appointment of Nicolas Ghesquire as their artistic director of women’s collections, just weeks after Tom Ford announced that he was retiring from the house. They assumed that Ghesquire would bring a new modern approach and vision to the label’s womens collections. Together, Ghesquire and Louis Vuitton will escalate women’s collections to the future, while still preserving what the brand stands for: quality, luxury and trust for their consumers.
The first women’s collection created by Ghesquire was in Paris in March of this year. The collection released everything from a black leather snap-front coat to a miniature LV trunk, leather bodices, knit skirts and lots of suede and animal skins.
At 15, he decided to intern for Agnes B in Paris. “I watched, I photocopied, I made the coffee,” he explained to the New York Times. After he finished school, he then achieved his dream to work with Jean Paul Gaultier, whom was eager to see what Ghesquire had come up with for his first show. The idea that Ghesquire of working for a designer like Gaultier and then having the opportunity to do so was, arguably, the best way to begin his career.
Now, Ghesquire has Gaultier coming to his shows. However, even with all of his success, fans still feel as though Ghesquire keeps being asked to prove himself.
After working on and completing his first Spring 2014 collection for Louis Vuitton, some believed he would burn out. But no, Ghesquire is proving that he was built for this. He just accomplished the LV cruise show in Monaco, which had never been done before. The show featured flared pant suits in brightly colored florals and a collarless trench coat bound with lace and sequins.
The show also included lots of flirtatious silk chiffon dresses fluttering down the runway. Noticeable accessories didn’t dissatisfy. There were sharp flat pumps and a gladiator boot hybrid, which is all the rage. Liya Kibede closed the show in a sea green halter-neck, mini dress, printed in blue coral, which critics believed to be a fantastic ending to the show.
Last year, in an interview with System Magazine, Ghesquire opened up about his brazen departure from Balenciaga, where he worked from 1997-2012. Ghesquire stated that his largest reason for leaving was due to a lack in business support.
Fans sure are glad to have him on team Louis Vuitton and cannot wait to see his future designs and collections.
