In recent months, Nicole Kidman has stolen the focus of the media with the hit HBO show Big Little Lies and her eye-catching looks at the Cannes Film Festival. While she is no stranger to the spotlight, she is now on the cover of Instyle’s June issue, primarily speaking about fashion and how big of a role it has played in her life. “There are dreams attached to fashion,” she said. “When it is presented in a way where you go [gasp], it just makes you feel good.” She continued speaking of her fashion successes saying, “It allows me to express what I’m feeling, as in, I want to wear that because that’s actually my rebellion right now. Or that’s my way of fitting in. Or it’s my way of saying no. Or it’s my way of saying I’m different. I grew up with a grandmother and a mother who loved clothes.”

Although she has stunned the crowd in all of her outfit choices in the past, only a few have been truly memorable to Kidman. She is donating her white Balenciaga gown she wore during her wedding to husband Keith Urban in 2006, to an Australian exhibit called “Love.” When speaking of the exhibit, she mentioned, “I’ll support anything that supports love. Truly. Isn’t it the essence of everything? It can heal so many things. Good love, sweet love, kind love, gentle love, powerful love. There are so many different forms of love, which then leads to loss, which then leads to all the primary emotions. We all know children who were raised with love. You can see them.”

Simultaneously, she couldn’t have done it without the countless designers that dressed her throughout the course of her fame. “I remember when I first met with John Galliano and I would see him working in Paris at Dior,” she remembered. “And also, Karl Lagerfeld, all of those Chanel dresses. But then, you know, Jane Patterson was one of the greats.”

Patterson, the costume designer, is well-known for The Piano and The Portrait of a Lady. During the Instyle interview, Kidman was asked about working alongside fellow actresses Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley in Big Little Lies. “I always say when women unite and work together, we’re very powerful,” the 49-year-old actress said. “One, because we’re very loyal. And two, we’re all multitaskers, and we can get stuff done. It’s a beautiful thing when you can actually make a project work based on true friendships.”

In the hit HBO show, Kidman’s character is a victim of domestic abuse, which is an incredibly prominent issue in society. When asked how she got into character, she said, “On Big Little Lies I was completely disturbed by it. It penetrated. Everything does in different ways, but that’s the place you exist when you work creatively…Also, that was dealing with issues that are very, very present. I meet people all the time who are going through it. And I experienced it in that way [on set] where I would come home and be physically hurt at times.” Nicole Kidman has stolen the spotlight for years, and we can predict she will continue to do so for years to come.
