Overalls are fashion heroes for the young people of the world. They are reminiscent of freedom, playfulness, and easygoing summer afternoons lounging in the sandbox. Despite their usual reservation for children, with the emergence of the romper, overalls have acquired a new edge that lends itself to adults as well. The trick is learning to wear them with sophistication, and add an element of more modern style, so they don’t look too childish.

There are variations as to how to dress up overalls, or how to dress them down. Short or long overalls that are denim and distressed have two interesting sides. You can wear them with heels to create juxtaposition, or embrace their casual charm and pair them with little sneakers.

More elegant overalls made of leather or another polished fabric can also be juxtaposed with Converse or boots. Keep it simple, and let the overalls themselves be the statement piece. Or, go all out and work a pair of strappy heels with your overalls.

What you wear under this versatile garment is just as important. Often times, if the overalls are fancier, a simple basic top will do the trick when accessorized with great jewelry. However, if you’re rocking the classic faded jean look, you can experiment with colorful tanks and bandeaus.

Overalls have not yet been abandoned, despite the different connotations they carry now. Release your inner child and embrace your playground past. Maybe avoid the light-up sneakers though.

Here are multiple different ways to wear and accessorize overalls this summer, both formal and relaxed.
