Smile: Looking angry in a photo isn’t a good look for anyone. If you’re with friends or taking a solo picture, look like you’re having a good time.

Lighting: Taking a selfie during the day when you can use natural lighting is best, but if you are in the situation where you are going to take a selfie at night, use a lot of light. If you take a picture without enough light, it will create shadows on your face making the picture unflattering.

Outfit: It doesn’t matter so much as to what you wear, but that you don’t wear the same thing in a photo. The worst thing that could show up on your Instagram page is you in the same shirt twice in the first eight photos. These pictures could have been taken weeks apart, but that’s the impression someone looking at it will get.

Angles: Everyone has a favorite side of their face, if you don’t know yours you’ll find it eventually. Look back at old photos and see the way you posed, or the side that’s more prominently shown, you may already know your angles, but didn’t realize it.

Filter: These are applied after you’ve chosen the photo you like best. There are numerous apps with all kinds of filters on each of them. With a simple search for them in the app store you’ll be able to try out some and see which ones you like best.

Don’t over hashtag: Instagram doesn’t have a limit to how much you can hashtag, although some people need it. The more hashtags you use, the more people will see it, that much is true. But don’t fill up your friend’s feeds with your hashtags alone. Keep it to a few hashtags that you feel sums up the picture and what is going on in it.

Upload it everywhere: Don’t feel full of yourself if your Instagram is connected to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. It’s alright to want to spread your face around, especially if you look really good.
