Not everyone has the tolerance for bigotry like A&E network and the Duck Commander family posse. After word broke out that outspoken catholic, Phil Robertson was to be honored at Louisiana Tech graduation ceremony, students and faculty began protesting. Word only got out the day before the ceremony, so students and faculty took to Twitter to express their disagreement with the choice of honor.
“#NoHonorinBigotry” is the trend organized by LGBT students that swept through Louisiana Tech students timelines. There has even been a petition created on change.org to revoke the honor from Robertson. The petition brings to light all of the discriminatory remarks made by Robertson, and asks the council if this is someone they think truly deserves the honor. There is already over 200 signatures on the petition.
Phil was awarded with the Tower Medallion Award and inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Although he was not present to accept the award himself, his wife and son accepted it on his behalf. This initiated several faculty members to walk out of the ceremony in disgust.
In response to the controversial honor, the school released a statement: “It’s important to note that the annual Tower Medallion recipient is selected by the Louisiana Tech Alumni Association and it’s member representatives, and not the university. It recognizes those alumni who have achieved in their professions while remaining loyal to their university.” The new season of Duck Dynasty is set to premiere on A&E on June 11 at 10 P.M.
