“Men love a woman with curves” -A popular Facebook profile update reads in today’s society. Well, if this is true, why do they have such a poor reputation in the fashion industry? Let us examine some overwhelmingly and perhaps disgusting statistics and truths of the fashion industry.

Most runway models reach the physical boss mass index criteria for Anorexia and Bulimia. Ten years ago, runway models weighed only 8% less than the typical, everyday woman; today they weigh more than 23% less! On the other end of the spectrum, plus size models used to range from sizes 12 to 18, but now only range from sizes 6 to 14! Or depending on which designer you are dealing with it starts as low as size 4.  While both seem to advocate for the average woman, the range has become smaller, and begins at a criteria that most woman can meet. If a size 4 or 6 is considered plus sizes, then majority of American’s are plus size. We live in a plus size society; a healthy curvy hard working women.   If these statistics are true, what is the problem with plus size models? Why do people strongly oppose the idea of them?

What is causing friction between the fashion industry and the average, everyday woman? The average woman in today’s society wears clothes larger than a size 14. These women are just as beautiful as the underweight model who fits into children’s clothing. Woman want validation of all body types and men say they embrace them. So what seems to be the issue? Treat every woman next to you like any other woman on the catwalk! A woman with curves is to be celebrated and perhaps be just as embraced on the mainstream fashion catwalk.

Think of it this way: plus models are a real model, depicting and emphasizing the true size, figure and curvature of the everyday woman! Embrace yourself for who you are, and make sure that you become just as infatuated with your body as your neighbors’! Let’s show the world what a true model is!
