George R. R. Martin, writer of “Game of Thrones” (A Song of Ice and Fire) may have to write an unexpected eighth book to complete the series.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said how he first thought that it would take three books to complete the series. This has since turned into a seven part series. As he continued to write, he is now saying it may take up to eight books. This is exciting news for fans who don’t want to have to see the series end.

“I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story,” explained Martin.
As of right now, five of the books have been published since the series started in 1998.
According to The Guardian, Anne Groell, editor of Martin’s books, is to thanks for the extended series, as she was the one to encourage him to write more. Her argument for more books was “seven books for seven kingdoms”. Later on the two realized there were eight kingdoms, so that may result in eight books.
As of right now, there are only seven under contract but Jane Johnson, Martin’s publisher, explains that only Martin can know how long the series will be.
Even if an eighth book were to happen, the release of the book could be a few years in the making, as fans have experienced this delay in the past.
As of now, fans are focusing on waiting for the sixth book, “The Winds of Winter”, which has an unannounced release date. Although the wait is long, fans have endured much longer, one of the longest waits having been six years.
In the mean time, fans can busy themselves with the “Game of Throne’s” series on HBO every Sunday night at 9pm.
