You may have heard that a glass of red wine per night is actually good for your health. Many have believed it to have the capability of reducing your chances of developing heart disease. The antioxidant was believed to be found in the ingredient Resveratrol. But, put down that glass and your party hats, according to bloomberg.com, a study of 783 men and women aged 65 and older found they didn’t live longer. Also, they were just as likely to develop heart disease and cancer, than those who didn’t consume any wine. The study was conducted by Richard Semba of John Hopkins School of Medicine. Previous studies have told consumers that antioxidants found in chocolate, grapes, red wine, and peanuts provide health benefits useful to slow aging and lower the risk of disease. Researchers have found that Resveratrol has “no substantial influence” on inflammation, cardiovascular disease, cancer, or longevity.
At the beginning of the study, 639 of the participants were free of cardiovascular disease. During the course of nine years, 174 people developed heart problems, and 34 developed cancer. In the span of nine years, 268 of the volunteers had passed away. Doctors recommend a plant-based diet with whole grains, fruits, and vegetables as the best bet to ensure longevity. Despite red wine and dark chocolate not providing the health-altering benefits that we thought they did, they are still delicious and can be consumed in moderation. Although they won’t necessarily add 20 years to your life, it won’t take them away either.
