On June 14th and 15th, the true Gatsby aficionados of New York gathered on Governors Island for the Jazz Age Lawn Party. It was an affair for the dedicated vintage-lovers, many of who were in costume.
Gatsby style, or the style of the mid-1920s, was all about freedom for fashion. Women were suddenly less restricted. They began to embrace shorter skirts with pleats and increased ability for movement. The cloche hat came into being followed by the emergence of bobbed hair. In 1925, the shift dress exploded the “flapper” image with a dropped waist and straight bodices.
Many honor the roaring 20’s look today with events like the Jazz Age Lawn Party and remember one of the women who began to liberate women’s style, Coco Chanel.
Suddenly, thanks to Ms. Chanel, women were wearing trousers and abandoning their corsets. With the emergence of less restrictive clothing, women developed a more masculine side that appealed to their personal empowerment.
So the Jazz Age Party on Governors Island is about remembering more than beautiful style for its own sake, it’s a dedication to a new era of freedom and hope for fashion that inspired both women and men. It doesn’t get much more abundant and reckless than Gatsby, and that’s what the 20’s were about, glory and glitter, from spirit to flapper dress.
