Retailers Are Said To Profit From 90s Craze Just In Time For Back-To-School

Anyone who’s a follower of fashion, plus anyone who’s walked into a clothing store within the last few years, know that the 90s are back and thriving. The trends of twenty years ago have crept back into the popular consciousness in the form of chokers, slip dresses, plaid, platforms etc.

This trend can be observed amongst fast fashion retailers such as Zara and H & M. However, at the cusp of the back-to-school shopping season, experts believe that the return of the era of boy bands and furbies will prove very profitable indeed.

With stores such as American Eagle and Urban Outfitters stocking up on items such as crop tops and high-waisted mom jeans, expectations are high. Most reports claim that with a strong economy and better consumer confidence in comparison to previous years. According to Thomson Reuters Data, the latter is expected to report a sales growth rate of 5.6 percent this quarter, while the latter is estimated to experience a 4.6 percent.

Many, such as A-Line Research Analyst Gabriella Santaniello, is referring to the phenomenon as the “Friends” trend; which refers to the fascination young people have with the 90s sitcom. To the point that many are emulating looks from the show.

This shift also shows a distinct turn from the logo-emblazoned craze that many saw in the earlier portions of the 2000s. This caused some sluggishness amongst US retailers as millennials seemed to opt for European retailers such as Zara and H & M. Yet, it seems that things may change now that American labels are finally catching up.

As said by Vanessa Valiente, a personal stylist and creator of V-Style, a fashion blog says, “Every twenty years fashion comes back…You stay away from something long enough and you crave it.”
