Set as a prequel to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, Rogue One follows a ragtag band of rebels whose mission is to steal the plans for the Death Star, who must forge an alliance together over their common goal for the greater good. Although Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and a few other familiar characters appear, the plot of the film is standalone, with a separate cast of protagonists.

This didn’t stop dedicated fans to the franchise, however. Despite the absence of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or newer characters from the main series like Rey and Finn, Rogue One is still holding steady in the second slot in the U.S., after ranking first for three weeks, the numbers at Box Office Mojo show. This makes it the second highest grossing film in the past year, and the eighth all time in the US.

Rogue One has still made less than half than The Force Awakens’ massive box office sales did. According to CNBC, the prequel’s opening last weekend in China brought in only about $31 million, leaving more than $1 billion to go to bridge the gap: The Force Awakens made about $2,068,223,624, according to Box Office Mojo.

However, the overall success of the film certainly opens the way for more Star Wars spinoffs, which have been a promise since before The Force Awakens opened. According to Fortune, last year Disney confirmed another movie in the franchise, a story following the adventures of Han Solo, which is slated for an opening in 2018.
