At the 2014 Women Who Dare gala, hosted by jewelry giant Cartier and Haper’s Bazaar magazine at the Skylight Clarkson Studios in New York, actress and Oscar nominee Rooney Mara turned heads in a lacy little black Givenchy dress (one of her go-to design houses) and vampy red lip. Mara, who went with her signature sleek center part hairdo, kept the accessories to a minimal—with just strappy, minimal black sandals and a single bracelet—to keep the focus on her plunging neckline and flawless fair skin.

Mara is no stranger to the color black (also a favorite of her character Lisbeth’s in 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but has never done the LBD quite like this before. The sheer lace inserts, open neckline, and knee-length style all soften the overall look of Mara’s (usually austere and uncomplicated) LBD—a word not typically associated with Mara’s impossibly chic, and quite serious, ensembles.
Will we be seeing more of Mara in this “lighter,”—though still keeping to her style roots in all-black—look? Or was this just a daring, one-night-only sort of deal? We’ll have to keep an eye on her and see!
