During the opening of Chao’s boutique in Bejing in 2012, the two decided that they indefinitely wanted to work together on a piece.

Chao told WWD, “I’m so used to doing my own thing, but Sarah Jessica was so easy to work with.” She continued, “She has a great sense of fashion and such a special eye for anything that’s style related.”

The brooch took two years to finalize and come to life. The pair worked to ensure that both of their styles would be portrayed in the accessory. Inspiration for the piece came from Sarah Jessica Parker’s association with the New York City Ballet. According to csnbc.com, the butterfly piece is a much sought after part of Chao’s collection. She has included a butterfly element to every collection that she has created since 2008, reflecting her metamorphosis as an artist.

“Ballerina Butterfly” is composed of a titanium and 18 karat gold body, brown diamonds, pearls and more diamonds. All in all, the butterfly has 98.09 carats and 4,698 diamonds.

Chao and Parker’s creation will go up for auction this October, which will be included in the Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Sale. The brooch is estimated to sell anywhere from $750,000 to $950,000. Profits from the auction will go to benefit the New York City Ballet.
