Sarah Jessica Parker worked the runway in a head piece that stole the show.
Her whole look was set to the theme of the Met Gala’s event which was “China: Through the Looking Glass”.
The red and silver headpiece, designed by Philip Treacy, towered over her long, blonde locks. The fire-y accessory had long red tassels draping down, and silver and red swooping upwards to resemble flames.
Silver jewels lined the front of the head piece, while red cotton balls were scattered throughout the rest of the design. The head piece, according to Styleite.com, was inspired by Chinese Opera Singers.
Vogue Magazine tweeted about the looks saying, “Leave it to @SJP to start the night off with a bang #MetGala.”
This isn’t the first time Parker has stunned the runway in a head piece like this. In 2013 she attended the gala in a gold and black Mohawk in honor of the Punk theme that year, which was coincidentally designed by Philip Treacy as well.
Despite the statement making head piece, not everyone was as fond about the design as were Vogue and other fashion outlets.
Parker’s head piece became a game of “Who Wore it Better?” on Twitter with side by side comparisons of cartoons and movie characters alike, who’s hair vaguely resembled Parker’s hat.
Some people even went so far as to compare her on Twitter to “Samurai Jack on Cartoon Network”, Jafar from Aladdin and Heat Miser from “A Year Without Santa Claus”.
Other celebrities like Selena Gomez and Kate Hudson paled in comparison to Parker’s head piece with their simple, yet elegant, floral and jewel designs.
Parker’s jewelry included Jennifer Fisher, while her stylist Erin Walsh help put the whole look together.
Fisher told Vogue.com, “the design process was my most collaborative to date.”
Parker’s dress, a black floor length gown with one sleeve featured a variety of patterns down the left side of her. In addition a train of black fabric followed her with red poppy flowers embroidered into the gown. The slit in on the left side of her dress allowed for Parker to show some leg, and her half-calf heeled shoes.
Parker is known for her Sex and the City role where her character, Carry Bradshaw, could always be seen in something designer. Parker did something different on the runway this time and wore a dress that she collaborated with H&M.
According to Yahoo.com, Parker commented on the collaboration saying, “They found all these beautiful fabrics – really beautiful vintage fabrics and vintage pieces, and hand dyed fabrics – and they used organic silk and cotton and tencel, and it’s been a really fun process.”
Parker told Cosmopolitan that the fabrics used came from Sweden and put into the gown.
The collaboration was part of H&M’s Conscious Collection. This collection tries to be conscious of shopper’s wallets, the environment, and the materials they use to create their clothing. H&M had contacted Parker about doing a collaboration, and Parker, who had already started to design her dress for the event, agreed.
Some issues came up with Parker’s dress and many others ensembles, claiming that the gala’s theme appropriated Chinese culture, with their gowns which were based off of China.
Connie Wang of Refinery 29 said, “There were approximately a million and a half ways to do it wrong. However, Sarah Jessica Parker might have found the most clever way to pay homage to Chinese culture and its Western interpretations – all while still looking like a top-notch queen.”
