The September Vogue US is traditionally the biggest and most prominent issue of the year. With that in mind, a comparison will be addressed between the top three Vogues: France, US and UK.
Natalia Vodianova graces the cover of French Vogue, bearing pieces from Nicolas Ghesquière’s first collection for Louis Vuitton. With the contemporary Sixties feel, to Jean Paul Gaultier’s timeless Breton stripes, the issue pays tribute to all who can translate the Parisian chicness perfectly. The photographer: Mert & Marcus.

Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss take over US Vogue’s cover with a pullout that unfolds to reveal extra models: Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente, and Andrea Diaconu. The cover is called “Instagirls” and Vogue describes the models as “savvy on social media,” and says they’re “building their own brands and single-handedly catapulting themselves to this generation’s version of supermodel status.” The Photographer: Mario Testino.

British it girl Cara Delevingne lands September Cover and takes on ‘60s inspired fashion for the September cover for Vogue UK. The British model poses in Louis Vuitton’s latest collection. The Photographer: Mario Testino.

Observing the covers definitely highlights the strong presence of models because the three magazines were based around models and not celebrities. We are witnessing the pop culture movement in US and UK, especially since models have been integrated in pop culture due to the social media. Having Delevingne on both covers is a career exaggeration for the model. Does it have to do with her pop culture affiliation? We have heard of the statement “Sex Sells” But has it shifted to “Pop Culture Sells?” We have seen the “It” girls take over the covers of Vogue several times such as Paris Hilton for the November Issue of French Vogue 2006. What force is driving the editors to choose the same model time over time? The answer is simple, Sales. I find boredom in that movement, especially when it becomes repetitive. It used to take talent and beauty to drive a face to the covers of Vogue! And why did is stop?
For the September Issue, the vote goes to French Vogue, model wise, direction wise and fashion wise.
