Showtime’s ‘Roadies’ is Cancelled After Only One Season

Showtime has officially cancelled Roadies after only one season, due to low viewership ratings.

The series hailed from an all-star producing collaboration with Cameron Crowe, Winnie Holzman, and J.J. Abrams. The dramedy series starred Luke Wilson and Carla Gugino, who portrayed roadies for a touring rock and roll band.

Although the creative collaboration from the cast and crew was enjoyable for the network, the series will not be returning for a second season on Showtime.

Cameron Crowe commented his thanks to the team and loyal viewers of Roadies on his personal web blog. Crowe also thanked Showtime and J.J Abrams for the opportunity to make season one of Roadies possible. He continued to comment that he loved working with this talented cast and crew. He also commented that he wishes that he could work with the same team again to create thousands of different stories, but the one season of Roadies will provide their fans a ten-hour tale of love and music.

Despite the star talent both on and off the screen, Roadies struggled to find an audience and also was given mixed reviews by film and TV critics. Maureen Ryan, a film critic, commented that the Showtime series felt like a Spotify playlist that was searching for a reason to exist. Other critics commented similarly, stating that the show was striving to be daring with their odd off beat characters, but instead were boring and annoying characters to endure weekly.

Roadies ten-episode series ended on August 28th, with only bringing in 500,000 viewers for their season finale episode. Roadies was the first ever show created by Cameron Crowe. Crowe is known for writing popular films like Say Anything, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Almost Famous, and Jerry Maguire.

During the premiere event for Roadies earlier this year, J.J Abrams commented that the series was in the works for a while for bother him and Crowe. Abrams also commented at the event that him and Crowe made a promise to each other to work on a TV series together in the past and made their wish come true with Roadies.

Cameron Crowe stated after the cancellation news that he had one of the best experiences of his career while working on Roadies and hopes he will work with another talented crew and cast again.
