Who doesn’t love a coming of age story? It touches our hearts and reminds us of our own coming of age moments. More than a coming of age story, we love a story about two unexpected people becoming friends, and learning from each other. The leading broadcast network has come up with a hit that embodies the best of both worlds. I’m talking about NBC’s “About a Boy”.  Based on the bestselling novel by Nick Hornby, “About a Boy” is the coming of age story that we never knew we wanted. This show also bears many similarities to the 2002 movie “About a Boy” starring Hugh Grant. Since it is a story that many are already familiar with one can only hope that NBC’s “About a Boy” brings something new to the table. After viewing the Pilot, which aired after the Winter Olympics, I can honestly say that I am intrigued.
Will Freeman (David Walton) is a songwriter who wrote a hit song and was granted a life of free time, free love, and freedom of financial woes. When Fiona (Minnie Driver) and her 11-year old son Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) move in next door, they disrupt Will’s perfectly unemployed world. Marcus shows up to Will’s house one day unexpectedly when running away from bullies, and Will lets him in. The rest as they say is history. The story of an unexpected friendship, NBC’s “About a Boy” has all the right pieces to a successful show; let’s hope it turns into several more seasons.
