Even if you don’t consider yourself a makeup maven, you should still put on at least a touch of mascara. It makes your eyes look brighter, wider, and adds drama and definition to your entire face. But there are definitely a few things you should follow even if you don’t wear mascara on the reg. Here are our most valuable tried-and-true tips.
It’s All In The Wand: Not all mascaras are created equal. There are big brushes, long brushes, clumpy brushes (ick), and wacky brushes (like Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes Mascara, $30, it’s like a little ball).
But the most important thing to know about brushes is this: the shape of the brush tends to mimic the result of your lashes. This mean that the wider, fatter, or thicker the wand head is (like Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Extravagant Mascara, $24), the more voluptuous, voluminous, and thicker your lashes will look.
This also means that if you opt for a skinny, slim wand, like Covergirl’s LashBlast Length, $7.99, your lashes will look lengthened and curled to the highest degree (remember to always, always, always, curl your lashes! It makes such a huge difference).
Do Not, I Repeat, DO NOT Pump Your Mascara: We’re all guilty of this one: We’re running late, our mascara’s running dry, so we pump it a couple of times. What harm could be done, right? Wrong! Pumping your mascara pushes air into the tube—and thus the formula. All of that air will only dry out your mascara (and, naturally, your lashes) more—leading to a vicious pumping cycle. Instead, add a few drops of ClearEyes or other eye solutions (just not remover) into your mascara. It’ll loosen up your mascara, and make it last longer.
Curl, Curl, Curl: You’re really not reaching your true eyelash potential if you’re not curling your eyelashes. It makes your lashes look longer, and much, much better. Try tossing your eyelash curler (like Shu Uemera’s award-winning version, $20) into your bra—no, seriously. The heat will make your curl last super long, so you don’t have to do the dreaded midday re-curl.
Try Baby Powder: We all somehow wind up with a bottle of baby powder in our bathrooms. But did you know that a light dusting of baby powder (with any powder brush) pre-mascara can make your lashes look thicker and longer? It’s basically primer that isn’t primer, which means one less tube in your makeup bag.
