The Insane Details at Zuhair Murad Fall 2018 Couture

By  |  1 Comment

For his Fall 2018 Couture show, Zuhair Murad took inspiration from Imperial Russia, incorporating the period’s textures and patterns into the collection.

Backstage before the show, Murad explained the reasoning behind his concept. He revealed that he was mainly inspired by the Russian czars and czarinas that had famously luxurious taste. For this couture collection, he wanted each piece to embody czar-status luxury. Murad went on to say that his many Russian clients also had a role in his inspiration. His Russian clients are “all beautiful and have very strong character.”

Similar to the rest of Europe, the aristocracy in imperial Russia was getting its fashion inspiration from France. On a few opening numbers, Murad incorporated masculine elements borrowed from military uniforms. He suggested that these military components added “confidence and strength” to ordinary pieces.

A dark backdrop drew all the attention to incredible details. Rich fabrics like velvet, duchesse satin, and chiffon were embellished with tonal arabesques or floral embroideries applied in bronze, gold, and silver. There was plenty of jewel detailing, with several dresses covered in beads or sequins. Embellishments were so elaborate at times that dresses scratched the floor when they moved across it.

As for color scheme, Murad worked with plenty of neutrals, including pale hues of green, gray, ivory, and pale blue, and even a few bold colors. A bright shade of blue was used to make long dresses with flowing capes. Rich shades of red and burgundy were used for a number of dresses, all intricately-detailed.

The end of the show featured a white, heavily embroidered bridal dress. When asked how many hours the embroidery for this dress might have taken, the designer responded, “Thousands and thousands. That’s another story.” Apparently, the dress is quite heavy. Although you’d look like a real-life queen wearing it, you might not want to carry all that weight around, especially on your wedding day.
