Crocs are easily the most maligned shoe in fashion history. The rubber, perforated clogs have always been the subject of much ridicule, spawning internet memes and fashion critiques galore. However, they do seem to be coming back with a vengeance as, like the fanny pack, it is having a major fashion moment. Just last year, Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2018 collection featured yellow and pink crocs covered in badges.
Just recently, the brand Cyprus V recently just released the newest development in the crocs craze: high heeled crocs! The shoes come in a variety of colors, such as white, black, and “wild orchid.” They are described as having an “elegant strap design” and “attractive meal hardware” along with a 3.5-inch high heel. Of course, the shoe has been relentlessly made fun of on social media.
But, many would be shocked to know that it is actually doing very well. The shoes have already sold out of Cyprus V’s website as well as Amazon. Yet, this isn’t surprising for Crocs at all, since it has been estimated that 200 million pairs of the shoes have been sold since the brand’s founding in 2002.
Maybe the high-heeled croc owes its popularity to people cashing in on the ugly-chic trend. After all, brands like Balenciaga have certainly made it cool to wear uncool things ironically. We have fanny-packs, dad shoes, and bucket hats to thank for that. Or, it could be the fashion world just being its usual fickle self.
