Traveling is hectic. While double-checking your packing list in your head, you’re always trying to ensure that you’re on time for your flight. When it comes time to get food, it is often rushed, so you can take it on the go.
These options are not always the healthiest, but eating on the go doesn’t have to be unhealthy! Here are 4 tips to give you the energy levels you need while traveling via airport:
1. Believe it or not, the airport does have healthy options, but those options can get expensive. If you have time, buy snacks to pack in your bag before you get to the airport to save money. Almonds, granola bars or dried fruit are great choices that are low in calories and will keep you full for a long time.
2. If you’re running late and the only option is airport food, do not worry. All hope is not lost. Do not resort to greasy pizza or empty calories served at McDonald’s. Healthy options are most often found in the quick shops with all of the magazines. A banana and a pack of almonds makes for a great snack during your flight. Other options: dried fruit, almond milk, pretzels or pop chips.
3. If you’re looking for a meal at the airport, there are several healthy options. Lucky for the frequent travelers, more and more vegetarian and vegan friendly options are being added to the airport shops, making it much easier to make health-conscious choices. Avoid dairy in your meal. It is heavy in calories and will sit heavy in your belly on a long flight. Opt for a salad with grilled chicken or vegetable sushi. Salads are served at almost every place in the airport, and you can find sushi at select airports. Another good option would be a fresh green juice.
4. Be cautious of processed food advertised as health-conscious. This also includes sandwiches. People often think that vegetarian sandwiches are low in calories because they are mostly vegetables, but many places add a ton of cheese, making it higher in calories.
There are always healthy options if you look hard enough. Do not submit to excuses that you need to eat fast food, just because you’re traveling. There are healthy options along the way!
