Agyness Deyn, originally branded as the new Kate Moss, has returned to the spotlight since disappearing in 2010 when she was supposedly working on an acting career. She has emerged with a new fashion line reminiscent of the androgynous style best portrayed on stars like Katherine Hepburn and Patti Smith.
The punk-rock British model’s collection recently made its debut on Net-a-Porter and is called Title A. Capturing a feminist touch, the line is basically menswear clothes with a feminine edge.
Crisp smoking jackets, blazers, pinstripe suits, simple pencil dresses, and trousers are the highlighted pieces. Textures play an important role, with wool and velvet being key players, both representing elegant feminine and masculine taste.
Much of the inspiration for the collection appears to derive from the 1940’s, especially considering the emergence of women wearing pants. None of the garments are overtly sexy, and yet the overall look gives every item a mysterious sex appeal that only comes from defying stereotypes.
Title A is all clean, cool, business sophistication. The color palette is Wall Street basic: black, white, grey, blue, brown, even a little maroon. No article is too explicitly “man” either, as every cut is flattering for a woman.
Deyn’s collection is about capturing femininity in a whole new way, and although the fashion world is experiencing a flooding of menswear for women, embracing a new paradigm means never discounting a single force for inspiration.
