TNT has officially renewed their scripted drama series The Last Ship for their fifth season, which only has aired on the network for only three seasons.
The Last Ship series stars Grey’s Anatomy past alum Eric Dane and Rhona Mitra. The show was recently just picked up for their fourth season this past July after The Last Ship cast and crew attended this year’s Television Critics Association’s (TCA) summer press tour. The upcoming fourth and fifth season is reportedly going to consist of ten episodes each.
Sarah Aubrey, TNT’s executive vice president of original programing, commented that The Last Ship viewers have raved all over social media about the exiting ride the show has given them for the last three seasons. Aubrey also commented that TNT is looking forward to watching the cast and production team create more drama, suspense, and action for their viewers for the next two upcoming seasons. With the fifth season approved for production, the new season is expected to premiere around summer 2018.
TNT has reported that their show The Last Ship is one of the top 10 summer dramas on basic cable among adults 18-49 and has an average 7.1 million viewership per episode on multiple platforms.
The Last Ship is based on William Brinkley’s novel, which follows the storyline about a Navy destroyer ship captain, Tom Chandler, who navigates his crew through a global pandemic, which has wiped out over 80 percent of the world’s population. While Chandler and the crew races to find their living loved ones, the ship must continue forward in their plans to find a possible cure and save humanity.
Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane are co-creators for the show and also serve as executive producers with director Paul Holahan. Steven Kane is expected to be the show’s showrunner for the next two upcoming seasons.
The Last Ship also has Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller as the show’s longtime executive producers. The show’s third season finale is expected to premiere on September 11th, 2016.
