Summer is upon us and with it comes the summer movie season. The summer months always seem to have theaters filled with new releases. Kids are out of school, families are reuniting and a cool dark theater has become a favorite way to beat the relentless heat. This summer looks to be full of movie-going choices. Here are a few of the top recommendations:
“Transformers: Age of Extinction”
Take a look at the trailer before you roll your eyes and laugh at the thought of yet another “Transformers” movie. First off, there’s no more Shia Labeouf; instead, the lead will be taken by the oh-so-popular Marky Mark. That’s Mark Wahlberg for those not catching the Funky Bunch reference. Summer blockbusters are known for their “wow effect,” and this movie looks set to deliver. Directed once again by special effects expert Michael Bay, the film pits robot dinosaurs against Megatron in a showdown that is sure to leave the theater trembling in its wake.

“Chef”
If you’re a fan of independent filmmaking, then look no further than “Chef.” Produced by Open Road Films, “Chef” looks to be the summer’s favorite independent comedy flick. It stars and is directed by Jon Favreau, better known from his directorial work in smash hits such as “Iron Man” and “Cowboys & Aliens.” It depicts the story of a professional chef who quits his job to open up a food truck. The film asks, what’s the point of life without having fun? It aspires us to remember to not take life so seriously, and maybe we can rediscover a lost passion along the way.

“The Giver”
“The Giver” is coming to the silver screen, and we couldn’t be more excited for its release. We all remember the story of a young boy who slowly comes to the realization that his perfect world isn’t so perfect after all. As the trailer shows, “The Giver” looks to be one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. Its appeal should stretch across all audiences as the book has become a staple of children’s literature. It stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Katie Holmes. Taylor Swift is also in the film and we would be surprised if the soundtrack was void of her talent.

“The Fault in our Stars”
The film stars the very popular Shailene Woodley (“Divergent”), and her character deals with the ups and downs of a teenager battling with cancer. She meets a fellow fighter in a support group, and the rest of the film divulges into their emerging relationship. Woodley has been a great success in the past few years, and she is being counted on to continue that success with this film. We’ve got our fingers crossed that films like “Transformers: Age of Extinction” do not keep this movie out of summer-viewing contention. You can take a look at the trailer here.
