“Transformers: Age of Extinction” kept its no. 1 spot at the July Fourth box office,  which beat the newly released comedy “Tammy,” according to a box office report.

“Transformers” received around $36.4 million in 4,233 locations in its second week of release, followed by the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Tammy,” grossing $21.2 million in 3,465 locations.

The box office said while the ten-day $174.7 million domestic grossing of “Age of Extinction” is meeting Producer Paramount’s expectations and is among the higher grossing films of 2014 domestically so far, the fourth of the series is still 24 percent away from the $228.82 million ten-day record of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” in 2011.”

CNN reported that the Warner Bros. “Tammy” did not reach the producer’s grossing expectation of $37 million across five days with only receiving $32.9 million in the first week.Even though “Tammy” had less grossing than “Transformers,” it is in fact a smaller production movie that costs $20 million. CNN also said the R-rating of “Tammy” may hurt the future grossing.

According to Huffington Post, despite the lower than expected grossing, Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., said he was very happy with the film.

This year’s summer box office numbers may seem big, but it is actually far behind from what it was in 2013. None of the Fourth of July week releases could compare to last year’s “Despicable Me 2.
