Tyler Mitchell Will Be The First Black Photographer To Shoot A Vogue Cover

It’s safe to say that famed Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour will not be leaving Vogue any time soon. There have been rumors swirling around for that the editrix, like many other editors of numerous other publications within the last year, would be ending an era at vogue and leaving her post. However, Conde Nast has vehemently denied these rumors.

What remains true, is one other part of the rumor. Many were speculating that Beyoncé, who is set to be to cover girl for 2018’s September issue, would be Wintour’s last cover girl. However, while the rumors about Wintour’s departure have been proven false, it is true that Queen Bee herself will be on the cover of the much-coveted issue.

What’s more is that Beyoncé will be given complete creative control over the issue. And the legendary singer has already chosen a photographer; 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell. Making this the first time in Vogue’s 126 year history that a Black photographer has shot the cover.

Mitchell is no stranger to the fashion industry. Mitchell graduated from New York University with a degree in film and television. After publishing his book of photos El Paquet, he began to gain widescale notoriety. Having shot for clients like Givenchy, i-D, Naomi Campbell, Solange Knowles etc. He says “That there is an honest gaze in my photos.”

He says that he likes to “depict Black people and people of color in a really real and pure way.”

Mitchell considers his racial identity to strongly influence much of his work, stating “I was always mentally placing myself in relation to others and very conscious of my Blackness.”

It seems that between Mitchell and Beyoncé, it seems that history will be made with Vogue’s September issue.
