She seems to be the name on everyone’s lips, the girl in the headscarf that made the 2014 MTV Music Awards worst dressed list, Pia Mia. She refers to herself as Princess Pia Mia on her Instagram and is being mentored by Kanye West. West has been consulting her on a lot of her creative projects.
In Feb. 2014, Pia Mia was signed to American record label Interscope Records. Pia Mia and Chance the rapper collaborated on the song “Fight for you”, written specifically for the science fiction film Divergent’s official soundtrack. The soundtrack peaked at # 16 on the Billboard 200. She announced her first debut album on the E! Network’s Fashion Police with Joan Rivers and said it will be released In Summer 2014.
Not only does she have a voice, but has a knack for everything social media. The girl has practically made herself famous by posting Acapella songs on youtube. No she is not interesting because of her originality, because, she is not, but rather her innovativeness.
The ultimate fashion statement is when one is original, but it’s hard to be that nowadays. Everything in fashion is a replica, remake or reference of something from the past. Someone designs a new mini skirt, it’s not exactly new because Twiggy was known for them in the ’60s. The accentuated shoulders and arms paired with an A- line skirt stemmed from when Christian Dior did his 1947 “new look.” Pia Mia says “look at me” wearing a headscarf that resembles the one Rosie the Riveter wore in the World War 2 feminist campaigns.
Not saying that wearing a scarf on your head is original, but wearing it as a high fashion accessory is. Until now, scarfs were something you wore to bed, to clean, or to go to the laundromat. It is not a representation of feminism like it used to be and can be deemed kind of cool. So if you see a bunch of teenage girls starting to wear different colored head scarves on a daily basis, we know who is to blame. This is exactly how trends start. We see someone wearing something one day, and we are like “I hate it”, the following week everyone is doing it and then we love it.
Pia Mia was born on Sept. 19, 1996 in Guam, USA. She is one of four children of Peter Perez Jr. and Angela Terlaje Perez. They are of European and Chamarro descent.
Before Pia Mia became a YouTube sensation with 1 million instagram followers, seen hanging out with Bella Thorne, her best friend. Now, she hangs out with Kylie Jenner and the Kardashians. She even has graced the show twice already, once during Kylie’s sweet 16 and another time performing a cover of Drake’s “Hold on, we’re going home” at the Kardashain home. Look out I think we are going to be seeing a lot of this girl.
