Claire Berlinski, an American woman currently living in France, tweeted about being trapped in her bedroom by her own cat on Wed., Jun. 25, morning. Her 10 thousand followers remained intrigued as she detailed her entrapment.
Berlinski is a self-described “novelist, freelance journalist, travel writer, and biographer who lives amid a menagerie of adopted stray animals in Istanbul.” She lived in Turkey last year until she left after the Gezi Park protests last year. Subsequently, she moved to Istanbul France and currently lives in the Marais district of Paris. This is where the incident occurred.
Berlinski began her story tweeting, “So my cat’s knocked the handle off my bedroom door and I’m locked in my bedroom now. Nothing left to try but to Tweet this drama.”
The writer told The Telegraph that she used Twitter as a means of gathering some advice on her situation. She followed up saying, “I’m not terribly unhappy about the situation. I reckon it’ll get sorted in due time, and meanwhile I’ve got lots to read.” Berlinski then began extensive discussion about French doors and their strength as well as the cost of locksmiths, saying, “This is France, folks. Do you understand how much locksmiths charge per hour here? I’d probably have to guarantee lifetime employment.”
Humorously, the writer wrote later, “This is chutzpahdik. The cats are now meowing and pawing at the door because they want to be let in.”
After tweeting for two hours, Berlinski’s feed was empty. She was ultimately saved by her father who was alerted. He lives about a mile from her. Berlinski then assured her Twitter followers that help was on its way.
After the mayhem, the cat-lover wrote a plea for someone to adopt her friend’s cat in Cairo. She provided information so that prospective adopters could get in touch with her or her friend.
