What to Do When You Just Can’t Wait

My boyfriend took a disc golf vacation (yes, that’s a thing) with one of his buddies. The travel included long stretches with no phone service, so a lot of the time he couldn’t message me. Now, maybe it’s because it was the first time I didn’t see him for more than a week, but I noticed he was gone. A lot.

So after I’d finished combing through the pictures I have of him, asking for updates, and literally dreaming that he’d come back early, I decided I really needed to occupy my time. So if you’re waiting for someone, or for something to happen, here are four ways to keep yourself occupied without going crazy in the meantime.

Get to work

I quickly found that nothing makes time drag like, well, nothing. If you’re waiting on a vacation, the end of the workday, or a visit, find something productive. Throw in laundry and scrub your shower down. Ask your boss for an extra project you can do on the side in your downtime. Put on music and write up a paper. They say time flies when you’re having fun, but it also does when you’re engrossed in some task. And you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you made good use of your time.

Call a friend

And don’t spend all your time talking about whatever you’re anticipating. Instead, find out what’s going on in their lives. Talk about what you’re doing now. Get coffee, catch up, and appreciate someone else’s company. I took the time I might have spent with my boyfriend as an opportunity to hang out more with other friends.

Do something fun

With or without a friend, look for something you genuinely like. Shopping, a movie, a game of Monopoly, a trip to the pool, whatever you like. Just focus on enjoying today instead of wishing it was tomorrow. After all, anything could happen between now and then.

Make preparations

You can’t rush time, but you can make sure you’re ready in time. I decided that since I had space in my schedule, I’d devote a slot to finding a new date-night dress to debut after my graduation. If you have an upcoming vacation, you might do a little research about local attractions for the place you’re going, or get your bags packed and shopping done. Of course, this won’t help you if you can’t stop thinking about it and waffling over which pair of socks to bring, but if you can get ready and then put it aside, you’ll be one step closer on both fronts.

I'm a lover of words in all forms, sweatshirts in all conditions, and God in all circumstances. I particularly enjoy working collaboratively on the written word and wearing microfiber robes (preferably at the same time). Most of the time I don't get enough sleep, but I make a valiant effort.
